Today

For SATB chorus and piano; secular text based on poems by Frank O’Hara
Length: 5:00
Difficulty rating (1-5): 3
Listen to a performance by the New Hampshire Master Chorale, Dan Perkins, conductor
Published by Yelton Rhodes Music, a subsidiary of Subito Music Corp.
Today was commissioned and premiered by the Corning West High School (NY) Occidentals, Lorrene Adams, conductor.

Just after our first child was born, he received a lovely poetry anthology from his godmother. I read to him often from it, and was drawn again and again to the same three poems, all by the 20th Century American poet Frank O’Hara. I loved their passionate, specific imagery, their playful energy, the irrepressible love of life they expressed. When my friend Lorrene Adams approached me about a commission for her high school chorus, I didn’t think twice about what texts to set. “Oh! Kangaroos, sequins, chocolate sodas! You really are beautiful!”

Read the text of the Frank O'Hara poems:
"Autobiographia Literaria"
"Song (Did you see me walking by the Buick Repairs?)"
"Today"
