Memorial Day, written for young band, contains several opportunities to begin a discussion with students about the contrast between major and minor. It’s the composer’s hope that you’ll talk about those contrasts as a bridge to a deeper discussion of Memorial Day, and the mixture of pride and sorrow that all Americans feel as we remember the people who gave their lives for our country. One educator colleague described this work as “that ‘something different’ for young band that I’m always looking for when I open a new catalog . . .”
