Finalist, 2003 Wegmans/Penfield Music Commissioning Project Composition Contest

Tango Melancólico was written in 2002, and premiered by the Greeneville (TN) High School Symphonic Band on May 6, 2003, with the composer conducting. It’s dedicated to Peter M. Hodges, longtime director of the Greeneville High School Bands, and my own first music teacher. Tango Melancólico gives bands the opportunity to explore a variety of musical moods and contexts in a very accessible setting. This is one of the few pieces of mine that I’ve continued to tinker with after it was “finished” – in an attempt to play up the contrast between the sad A section and the lighter B section, I added some singing to the B section, and proposed the new title One Sad, Silly Tango.  Click on both audio links above to compare the two versions.
