I wrote this for flutist Iris Gross, who premiered it at UCLA in 1989 – she was looking for a work that would allow her to switch back and forth among flute, alto flute, and piccolo.  The title refers to the source of the work’s initial musical ideas – three different gestures for the three instruments from works by three different French composers.
